Ways of Dealing with Stress

Stress tends to visit us when we’re tired, when we’re sick, when we’re driving through a crowded freeway , when we’re late for an important meeting, or if we’ve taken on too many responsibilities. When circumstances are out of our control, we feel stress. When our basic needs are not being met and our safety is threatened, we tend to get anxious.

Stress and anxiety for a Christian can take on many different shapes and forms, yet in general, for most Christians, stress demonstrates one idea -lack of trust in God. For Christians, stress DOES have a positive …it can be a reminder that our lives are out of balance. We drift away from God and stop depending on Him daily for strength, forgetting the many promises in His Word.

Don’t worry about these things, saying, “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?” These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Matthew 6:31-32 (NLT)

God can be our major resource for coping with stress if we do not neglect reading His Word. The Holy Spirit often illuminates passages of Scripture relative to the stressors we are facing. Meditate after you have asked God for direction and listen for the answer.

The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Psalms 9:9
